The capital of Slovenia, the city of Ljubljana

The founder of Ljubljana was Jason, the Greek prince, together with the Argonauts

The capital of Slovenia, the city Ljubljana is with about 270.000 inhabitants also the larges Slovenian city.

It lies between the Karst and the alpine regions at 298 meters above the sea level. As the legend says, the founder of Ljubljana was Jason, the Greek prince, together with the Argonauts. While they were fleeing from King Aites they sailed from the Black Sea up the Danube into the Sava and from Sava into the Ljubljanica where Jason has encountered a terrible monster, which he fought and slew.

Ljubljana dragon was the monster, which has now its permanent abode on top of the castle tower on the Ljubljana coat of arms.

One of the special features of Ljubljana’s architecture is Tromostovje ("Triple Bridge") which is made up of an old stone bridge from 1841 and two side ones which was added in 1931 by the architect Jože Plečnik. They all together provide an elegant entrance into the Old Town. One of the central squares of Ljubljana is Prešeren’s Square, designed by the architect Maks Fabiani who planned a new connection between the medieval town and the railway station after the earthquake in 1895.
